Kew Gardens

My book is on the Kew Gardens website!

Apparently, you CAN order it for delivery into the US.

UPDATE!

Book sighting by some of my friends from the chateau residency!

Sneaky Artist Podcast

I had a wonderful time discussing illustration and sketching with Nishant Jain.

A lot is changing in publishing, illustration, and maybe everything. I have been in the business for 30 years and the one thing you can count on is change. But there is hope.

Listen here.

HADORI STANDS UP Kickstarter

LAUNCHING TODAY!

Shari Lyon has decided to release the 4th book of the Read To Me Sing To Me series herself.

I had a wonderful time doing the art for HADORI STANDS UP!

Shari and I first worked together on Paw, Hoofs, and Wings, the official children's book for the San Diego Zoo Centennial.

This is a much more serious book. It is such a beautiful story. It is another book that takes place at night but the art is darker than Paw, Hoofs, and Wings.

The story is about a hippo who stands up to protect her friends from poachers.

You can back the Kickstarter until the end of June.

Sing with the animals!

There are some sketch tiers! I know I have a lot of friends who love hippos.

And I LOVE the Sticker Sheet!

Auckland!

I went to Auckland, New Zealand in April for the Urban Sketchers Symposium. I will do a longer post soon after my deadline crunch but it was an amazing experience!

Faculty Award from NKU

I started teaching illustration 10 years ago NKU and it has been an honor to work with such a great team of instructors at NKU SOTA.

Teaching has been an amazing opportunity to work with artists starting on or altering their career journey. I am still stunned to receive this honor. Thanks NKU!

In other news:

I just got back from the Urban Sketchers Symposium on April 25th. I will do a whole blog post soon.

Lots of great sketches and I did a lecture!

Drawing Attention

I wrote an article for Drawing Attention about our wonderful trip to Romania!

We are taking sketchers back in 2024! I hope to go in July for a weekend when I am visiting France for an artist residency.

Sketchy Talk

I started a podcast for my Patreon as I was working on my art book, SKETCHING HERE & EVERYWHERE: MY SKETCHING OBSESSION.

It has been fun talking to other artists and sketchers about sketching, sketchbooks, and creativity.

Since the book will be shipping in March, I am refocusing my Patreon on new publishing projects and will continue the podcast since it is so fun.

Here are the first five episodes.

Happy Christmas and New Year!

Merry Christmas from the Yule Cat Lads: Conan the Destroyer and Thundarr Thunderpaws!

From me, Troy and Miffy too. She chose not to be illustrated with the boys.

New Shop!

People were so interested in the mini-palettes Troy and I developed, that I have them available to order online.

Get one here.

Here is a little video I did with my friend Vanessa about loading your palette.

You can also still pre-order my book on sketching.

Final Week

It has been a whirlwind! Even though the book is funded, the Kickstarter lasts for one more week!

We have unveiled some cool SKETCH goals! I really hope we unlock the $10.000 one for the PDF booklet on palettes. I am already experimenting.

I am also donating a tree for each backer through One Tree Planted. They are a non-profit dedicated to reforestation. My friend Ryan Claytor did it for his Kickstarter and it is a fantastic idea!

I was on WVXU this week talking about Sketching Here & Everywhere and Books by the Banks. I will be there Saturday. Stop by!

I also have a show opening at Columbia Plaza on October 17th from 4-6.

Hope to see you there!

Alp Nik

My latest book from Werd & Weber just came out!

I did not know a lot about mountain climbing until I illustrated this book. I watch a lot of videos about climbing gear on YouTube and climbing disasters. The topic is so interesting and so was Ueli Steck. He was in the league with Alex Honnold as far as climbing and was an amazing athlete.

The book is in German if you are wondering.

Sketching Here & Everywhere: My Sketching Obsession

The Kickstarter for my book launches this week!

Here is a sneak peek at the video. The footage was shot by Tony Moorman and the music is by Hans Wald.

You will be able to pre-order here: mysketchingobsession.com

Add your email address to the mailing list to get notified when it is available for pre-order.

We also will have this mini-palette available with the book that my husband Troy and I developed.

The Return to Kew Gardens

At last, I can show this off! My new book, Return to Kew Gardens, written and invented by Marsha Varrow, is available at the Kew Gardens shop! So, London friends, let me know if you see it!

It is a lovely little book and it will be on their website soon for international ordering but it is in the store now. I will have pictures soon.

We plan to do a book launch so stay tuned for details.

We are starting on Book 2 which will involve a tea party!

More soon from this enchanting world!

New Website!

My new website is LIVE!

After years of working with my excellent web designer Jon at 3Verb, his company is retiring the server my site was on. It seemed like a good excuse for a complete redesign, especially with my new art book Kickstarting in July.

I did it in Adobe Portfolio and they have some awesome templates.

It is weird going through all my art over the years to put this together. Thousands of pieces of art are hard to distill. I have done a lot of cool projects over the years and have a few more to reveal soon including The Train Rolls On to the North Pole, Sloth's Treehouse Inn for San Diego Zoo, and a couple more! Let's just say I am booked to the ears through 2023!

Stay tuned for more with my art book and be a part of my Patreon!

Urban Sketching for Teens Workshop

I am doing an urban sketching workshop on April 30th for teens.

The Cincinnati Art Club is having an Urban Sketching Workshop for Junior and Senior High School students. The workshop is in conjunction with a four-day event featuring Cincinnati Master artists from the past and present. Urban Sketching can ignite a love for the place where you live and begin a practice that could put you on the road to mastery.

The workshop will be led by Christina Wald, a professional children’s book illustrator, who also teaches Illustration at the college level and is a leading member of the Urban Sketchers of Cincinnati. She will facilitate a 10:00-3:00 workshop on April 30th at the Cincinnati Art Club https://cincinnatiartclub.org/

If you are interested or would like more information, email Christine Kuhr at ckuhr1522@yahoo.com Sponsored by Cincinnati Art Club members and the Ohio Arts Council.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Happy Holidays everyone! It has been a sad year but I have gotten to work on some really cool projects I cannot wait to share.

Best wishes for 2022 and keep your loved ones close...

Versus Evil, A Hire An Illustrator Project

Hire an Illustrator has a really nice portfolio site and recently did this fun trading card promotion. I did my Ultimate Sinister character I have drawn since junior high!

Here are the printed cards. SO FUN!
